I think Italian seasoning is a great flavor profile for Swiss steak.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>cubed steak<\/strong>\u2013 swap with round steak, chuck roast (cut into pieces), or even boneless short ribs.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>celery<\/strong>\u2013 I just use the center part of the celery. You can substitute with bell peppers or omit if preferred<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>yellow onion<\/strong> \u2013 I think a shallot would be a wonderful substitute here. It\u2019s a more mild flavor but is delicious!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>carrots<\/strong> \u2013 you could even use baby carrots if you prefer. <\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>garlic<\/strong> \u2013 use fresh if possible but you can definitely use the jarred stuff here to keep it easy.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>stewed tomatoes with juice<\/strong>\u2013 use diced or crushed tomatoes in a pinch; add a pinch of Italian seasoning if needed.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>light brown sugar<\/strong> \u2013 this just helps slightly with the strong acidity from the tomatoes. It doesn\u2019t make it taste sweet.
